Fred Neil's epoymous second album (third overall if you count his collaboration with Vince Martin, Tear Down The Walls) came out in 1966, when the folk-rock and singer-songwriter genres were taking off - it’s often considered an important album in the development of both genres.Leaving the tradition of folk songs as protest music behind, its lyrics focused on more personal and introspective.

Fred Neil wrote 'Everybody's Talkin' in five minutes at the end of a recording session in 1966 and recorded it immediately in a single take so he could take off and go back home to Miami. It's a great song and an unlikely standard that he probably never thought much of. It made him millions though after it was used in John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy (sung by Harry Nilsson) and was subsequently covered by at least a hundred other artists. Fred Neil spent the last 25 years of his life in Florida.

Fred Neil is the second album from Fred Neil, a pioneer folk rock musician. The album has a more laid-back sound than his debut, and contains his best-known songs; 'Everybody's Talkin' ' and 'The Dolphins'. It was re-released in 1969 under the title Everybody's Talkin' in response to the international success of the soundtrack of the movie Midnight Cowboy, which made a hit of the new title track for Harry Nilsson.[2] Music journalist Richie Unterberger characterizes the album as Neil's 'best',[3] and it was listed in the first (2005) edition of the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, edited by Robert Dimery.
