Emotiva XMC-1 IntroductionThere is a new entry inhigh-performance surround processors. Emotiva needs no introduction as a providerof high value and high-performance amplifiers and the XMC-1 is their latest AV processoroffering.

This 7.2 channel processor has balanced and unbalanced outputs, 8HDMI inputs, 2 Reference Analog inputs (XLR and RCA), 3 RCA analog inputs, AESand USB DAC digital inputs, and 4 independent programmable triggers. The XMC-1provides two features that stand out immediately: reference level two-channel performance andDirac room correction. It is clear that Emotiva is proud of their sonicachievement: the power on initialization sequence completes with the display ofEmotiva’s motto, “RE-THINK HIGH END.”There is an interesting bifurcation inthe processor market: the “high-end” touting extreme sound quality; and themainstream, large manufacturers, also marketing their sound quality but clearlyfocused on maximizing features.

Smaller manufacturers don’t have the resourcesto build in the massive number of features found in even the most basic networkAVRs. AV Pre/Pro's from smaller manufactures often lack video processing, streaming,multi-media, and wireless support—regardless of their cost. Such is the casewith the XMC-1. The XMC-1 does not support ATMOS or DTS:X decoding but with 7channels that is not a significant omission. The XMC-1 is made in the USA right at their corporate headquarters in Tennessee.Soare you losing much with the XMC-1? Emotiva feels it's time to move onand focus on the latest HD connectivity rather than wasting valuable realestate. The analog RCA's are of highquality gold plated connectors with strain relief. There are balancedconnectors for ALL of the channels including two independent subwooferconnections, and eight HDMI 1.4a inputs and two outputs.In order to do all of the HD decoding and processing,Emotiva armed the XMC-1 with some heavy horsepower including twin TexasInstruments DA710 32-bit floating-point, dual-core, 300 MHz DSP engines capableof 1800 MIPS each and Burr-Brown 24/192 DSD1796 DACs on all channels. One is for Dirac and the other two, named Preset 1 and Preset2, include separate PEQ filters for each speaker and configurable crossoverfrequency.

The 11 parametric equalizer filters available for each channel are configurablebetween 20 Hz and 20 kHz, with gain and width adjustments. This can becomplex so Emotiva recommends using a small number of bands as a starting point.The XMC-1 has built intests tones both sine-wave and pink tones (available at 65, 75, and 85 dB) onall channels for setting levels, identifying room modes, and aiding insubwoofer placement.Note: We recommend starting with the 65 or 75dBtest tone setting first to avoid being blasted out of the room if you have high sensitivespeakers and acute hearing.PEQ settings can be exported and imported from REWgenerated filters. It is also a simple matter to export filters to text files,edit them, and apply them to multiple channels. The XMC-1 PEQ filters operateat 96 kHz so no down-sampling occurs for the majority of high-bitrate sourcematerial. Subwoofer IntegrationEach speaker setting’scrossover slope is selectable between 12 dB and 24 dB (default) per octave. Thechoice allows for better matching to the subwoofer crossover.

EMM-1 MicrophoneThe XMC-1 includes the EMM-1 aluminum USB microphone that isa cut above the lightweight plastic mics found in most products. There is asmall tripod stand and an adaptor for use with full-sized boom stands. Auniversal calibration file is provided that is the preloaded by the Diracsoftware. Dirac LE (Standard)Dirac utilizes multi-phase filters to provide time-domaincorrection, even correcting the delays between bass and higher frequencydrivers. The goal is to minimize early reflections while preserving latereflections that many listeners find pleasing.

These benefits are said tocorrect in-room frequency response, improve dialog intelligibility, and providemore precise sound localization.The Dirac LE targetcurve supplied by Emotiva provides a modest bass boost and gentle down-slopingfrequency from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. In home, most speaker’s exhibit bass gain and areduction of the high-frequencies.

A flat target curve can have the effect ofthinning out the sound by reducing the bass and increasing thehigh-frequencies. The Dirac Live Calibration Tool (DLCT) is a separate computerprogram that connects to the XMC-1 using your network. DLCT takes 9measurements of your targeted listening area, creates filters, and loads theminto the XMC-1’s dedicated Dirac speaker preset.The XMC-1 Dirac filters operate at 48 kHz so down-sampling will occur forhigher bitrate source material. Dirac Live FullDirac Live Full is a $99 optional upgrade that adds support for additionalcalibrated microphones, custom targetcurves, and “curtains” to limit the high and low frequency calibration range.There is so much functionality added, I highly recommend the Full upgrade foranyone that wants to get the most out of a Dirac calibration.

Both versionsallow you to repeat the measurement in any order. But with Dirac Live Full, youcan save your measurements and go back at any time and tweak your target curveand uploaded the new filters to the XMC-1.

I would not make that assumption. No-one measures amps this way.RichI am not suggesting anyone to use a short sine sweep or any sweep to represent amp performance playing music at all. I am saying that one can do some of those sweep tests to compare the in room response of speakers using different amps and can see how much difference one can expect. From my own experiments using a $90 mic and free REW, I know the difference between speakers and their placements have far greater effect than between my different amps/preamps/AVR.

I have an MX-980 Universal Remote. I downloaded the IR codes specifically for this device (XMC-1 Main). The ability of the MX to control the XMC is inconsistent.

Most of the time it does not work. Other times it will respond sporadically. The at times it will work flawlessly. I have not been able to use any Macros referring to the XMC.

The remote that came with the unit works perfectly. I spoke with Emotovia and the specialist (who is incredibly intelligent) was not able to understand the problem. He recommended using the codes for the UMC-1 and gave me the conversions for the XMC inputs to the UMC input names. EG DVD on the UMC is Input 1 on the XMC. Setting up a separate button on the MX-980 has resulted in complete control of the XMC and perfect Macro operation. At times I check control of the XMC using the MX-980 button with the XMC-1 IR codes and it continues to be unreliable.

Some place on Google I read that the issue might be a conflict with the HDMI-CEC feature. I disabled this and has not made any change to the problem.Perhaps the XMC-1 is too new that the integration with Universal Remote Control has not been established with user experience.I had some difficulty learning the remote codes with the Pronto remote.If you can use codes, try the codes in this file.- Rich. Did you setup the remote or an installer. One thing with the macros is there maybe need to be longer pauses between each command, especially if ur line of site ir only.
