Mac® OS X® is an operating system for personal computers (PC), created by Apple. Now rebranded as macOS, it runs on Apple devices like the Macbook and iMac, and allows you to manage files and run other programs like web browsers, video games and even screensavers.

Mac OS X comes with a set of really awesome, HD screensavers. But, they can never be enough. You will want to download and install other exciting screensavers from the web – say, for example, new movie screensavers or festival-themed screensavers.Installing screensavers were easy (they’re still easy), but the way you added them to your library has changed in Mac OS X Mavericks or Yosemite. The updates in software and GateKeeper security have made the procedure a little lengthier.

And for a few people, complicated.It is no longer a “double-click and install” procedure, especially for third-party apps. If you try to do so, you will get an error message that the file cannot be opened, as it is from an unknown developer. However, do not be disheartened! Here are a couple of ways to install your favorite screensavers from the web on your Mac OS X. How to Add Screen Saver via Right-Click on MacThis method works for files having an extension of, “.saver.” For the files having the extension of “.qtz” extension, follow method #2.Step #1. Open “Finder” from your dock.Step #2.

In it, locate the screen saver you want to install. It will end with extension “ somename.saver” (somename being the file name.) Right-click on file and choose “open.”Step #3. A warning message will pop up, “somename.saver is from an unidentified developer. Are you sure you want to open it?” Click “ Open.”Step #4. Your “ System Preferences” will automatically start in your Screen Saver window.

With it, you will get a dialogue box asking to install the selected screensaver for the current users or all users on your Mac. Check the appropriate box and click on “ Install.”Step #5. Now, activate the new screensaver from the list as usual. How to Add Screensaver via Screen Saver Folder on MacThis method works for the files having the extension of, “.qtz.”Step #1. Press Command+Shift+G and type /Library/Screen Savers/Step #2. Drag the downloaded screen saver file in the “ Screen Savers” folder. Great wallpaper is hidden in plain sight on your Mac The Images Used by Apple’s ScreensaversIf you’ve ever mucked around with the screensavers, you’ve likely noticed that quite a few of them use images to rotate and alternate on your screen to prevent burn-in. Those images aren’t “baked into” the screensaver. They’re actually in a folder on your Mac, and the screensaver just reads them and uses them to save your monitor from suffering burn-in.These images include gorgeous photographs from National Geographic, and more. There are also nature patterns, images of the cosmos, and aerial photographs. They look beautiful in the screensaver, and they’ll work just as well for great wallpaper backgrounds on your Mac’s display.

Finding Those Hidden ImagesI say they’re hidden, but they’re really not. The images are just in a folder that you might not think to check. Spotlight, however, finds them quite handily. To locate them for yourself, just activate Spotlight by clicking the magnifying glass in the top right of the menu bar, or pressing Command-Space on your keyboard. Once Spotlight comes up, type Default Collections. The first hit will probably be the folder you want. Spotlight easily locates the “hidden” wallpaperIf all of that is too much trouble, here’s the full path to the screensaver images.

/Library/Screen Savers/Default CollectionsThese images are all sized at 3200 pixels by 2000 pixels, so they should work nicely for most resolutions. Of course, if you have a 4K or 5K display, they might be a bit small, but they’ll still look gorgeous. All together, Apple has provided 39 additional images that can be used for wallpaper. If you want to have easy access to them, you can add that folder to the Desktop pane of System Preferences easily. Adding the Folder to Your Repertoire of Great WallpaperJust go to System Preferences Desktop, and you’ll see a plus button. Click on the plus button, and use Finder to choose /Library/Screen Savers/Default Collections and then the folder you want to add.
